What is Among Us? The short answer is that it’s the newest phenomenon in the gaming world. A seemingly modest title for up to ten players whose games are solved by collaborating, betraying, lying, and – as far as possible – reaching a certain consensus. And, of course, the results are hilarious.
Halfway between a party game and survival horror games, Among Us invites us to share a spaceship with other players on a bumpy journey across the cosmos. What’s more, collaboration between crew members in managing the ship will be essential to make it back to civilization.
The bad news is that there is an insider among us. At the start of each game, one of the players will be named the impostor, and instead of doing the ship’s maintenance tasks, his job will be to sabotage it, set traps, and, finally, eliminate the rest of the players in cold blood.
There is only one way to stop the impostor: unmask him to the rest of the crew. Any player can raise the alarm at any suspicious movement and call an emergency meeting to share what is known about the impostor and remove him from the ship. But what if the saboteur himself is the one who has called the others together?
Logically, the impostor will always deny the truth, accuse the others, and will have no qualms about lying and saying whatever is necessary to continue with his purpose. And this is where the real game begins: through a chat window, all participants exchange justifications, accusations, and lies. And every rise in tone and every silence is taken into account.
Creating a unique sense of gameplay that mixes basic micro-games, the suspense of not being able to trust anyone, and the not-so-noble art of deception.
Unlike Fall Guys, the undisputed game of the summer, success is coming to Among Us after being on Steam for quite a while: it launched on 16 November 2018. Battlefield V hadn’t even been released and Fallout 76 had been with us for a couple of days.
In this respect, Among Us is the textbook example of how a game can achieve almost overnight success, even though it was all set to be buried on Steam and the Google and Apple mobile stores.
It has exploded up the sales charts, garnered thousands of positive reviews, and garnered a huge amount of views on Twitch and other streaming platforms.
So what has happened? On the one hand, as has happened before with PUBG, Fortnite, Apex Legends, or the aforementioned Fall Guys; it has become one of the most searched and streamed titles on platforms such as Twitch.
Surpassing at the time of writing these lines giants like Minecraft and even beginning to measure itself against heavyweights like Fortnite, which has just received Avengers, Fall Guys, or the unyielding Grand Theft Auto.
And for DjMariio to be trending on YouTube, with a video whose title claims that it is even better than FIFA, translates into a privileged window for countless gamers of any age. Better than any million-dollar campaign from an industry titan.
But what’s important is that Among Us is a lot of fun. Every game is capable of bringing out the best and the worst in us. Add to that the fact that it’s free to play on mobile, and it’s an irresistible proposition. It’s only just begun: the sequel is on its way!
You don’t have to be a fan of an internet personality to surrender to the fun of Among Us: playing with strangers is a guarantee of great moments and thrills, but doing it among acquaintances, sharing a sofa, and modifying the rules to your liking is a real laugh. And Innersloth, the creators of the game, are well aware of this.
The Among Us multiplayer system allows us to create, host, and even join games by sharing Wi-Fi, and if we prefer to play remotely, it includes cross-play between PC, Android, and iOS. In other words, there’s no excuse not to jump into the party.
While it’s true that the Steam edition is the only paid edition (you can download it for free on iOS systems and Android devices with ads), its price is almost symbolic: without a discount, it costs $3.99. And we know it’s been discounted to less this year.
But the best thing is that, like any social multiplayer game worth its salt, Among Us has evolved at its own pace over the years, adding two new free mappings, refining the experience and even introducing aesthetic elements. Some of them for a fee, it must be said.
Inviting everyone to enjoy it and test their deductive skills and their ability to lie through their teeth. To see how being innocent, we end up expelled from the ship and -as ghosts- to witness that the person who accused us is the real infiltrator.
And, in the end, to laugh to see how little by little the bad guy of the game gets away with it.
How to play Among Us?
In terms of gameplay, in each game of Among Us, 4 to 10 players connected online must start repairing a broken spaceship. At the beginning of the game, nobody knows which of the crew members (it can be one or two depending on the players) are the impostors, whose only goal is to boycott the work of their fellow crew members and kill the rest of the crew.
Therefore, the main theme of the game is to identify the impostor and eliminate him or her. The problem is that the unknown player looks just like his teammates, and may even be working directly with them while he is disguisedly carrying out his dark deeds.
During the game, there will come a point where all players must vote on who they believe to be the traitor of the group. If they fail, the most voted player will die, but in reality will remain a “ghost”, but will not be able to interact with the rest of the group. If the affected player was not the traitor, the real bad guy would continue to carry out his dark deeds behind the backs of the others.
Special cheats
If you’re already completely hooked on Spacemen, you can perform various tricks that will come in handy when you’re playing the game. Thanks to them you can be a winner throughout the games and also get more points that will be useful in case you compete with your friends, or in an opposing team.
- Pay attention to those who report corpses: In case you are in a game, always be a bit suspicious of players who report corpses, as they may have dark intentions when doing this act.
- Avoid being alone in dark areas: Throughout games, avoid being alone in places on the ship, as well as watch out for lights going out. If this happens, try to run away, as you may be about to be attacked.
- Stay in the middle when grouped with others: Whenever all players are grouped together throughout the game, try to stay in the middle.
What are the plans for the future?
For now, two very promising ones: the sequel has just been announced without a date on the horizon or a price range. Like Cyberpunk 2077, it will come when it’s ready. The servers (already collapsed from Among Us) will be closed and it will become Open Source. And in the face of that, one can only say: congratulations, Innersloth.
